Bentley is bringing its long‑standing expertise in material quality to the electric‑vehicle era with the upcoming Torcal SUV. The British marque has announced that the Torcal will showcase the world’s first 100 % Merino wool automotive fabric, a material traditionally associated with sweaters rather than car cabins.
Merino Wool – Luxury Meets Sustainability
Wool is prized for its softness and renewability, but it has rarely been used in automotive interiors because constant abrasion can wear the fabric quickly. Bentley worked with Fox Brothers, a Somerset‑based cloth maker that has been operating since the 18th century, to develop a wool that can survive the rigors of daily use. The result is a Merino wool fabric that is both luxurious and durable enough for a vehicle interior.
First‑of‑Its‑Kind Certification
The new fabric is the first wool automotive material to be certified by the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS). This certification confirms that the wool is sourced in a way that does not harm animals and follows strict environmental and animal‑welfare criteria. Bentley’s partnership with Fox Brothers therefore delivers a material that is both premium and ethically produced.
Wood Trim – Ombre Veneer
In addition to the wool, the Torcal will feature a wood trim called Ombre Veneer. The veneer is made from sustainably sourced walnut off‑cuts and recycled paper. Up to 1,000 individually selected layers are compressed together and then sliced to a thickness of less than one millimetre, creating a thin, elegant veneer that aligns with Bentley’s commitment to sustainable luxury.
Where the Wool Will Appear
Exact placement of the Merino wool within the Torcal interior has not been confirmed. Teaser images released by Bentley show the wool on one of the doors, but the brand has not indicated whether it will be used on seats, panels or other surfaces. Bentley emphasizes that the material will not compromise the vehicle’s comfort or durability.
Why It Matters
Bentley’s move demonstrates that renewable, natural materials can be integrated into high‑end automotive design without sacrificing the brand’s hallmark luxury. By creating a 100 % Merino wool fabric that meets RWS standards and pairing it with a wood veneer produced from reclaimed resources, Bentley is setting a precedent for other manufacturers seeking to combine sustainability with premium craftsmanship.
